Enemies to lovers is without a doubt one of my most favorite trope in romance novels. When I first read the blurb of Slashes in the Snow, the story sounded so appealing with angst and suspense in the mix. It was also my initiation to M. Never’s books! I wasn’t fully convinced by this story, but still it was an enjoyable read!
When Kira is dealing with strange events in her house and thinks she has a stalker, she pursues the help of her estranged stepbrother Ky. Her mom and step father being away for the summer, Ky is her only option to feel protected! While she doesn’t know the man, she heard great things about him through his father.
I must admit that the suspense was intriguing and had me hooked from the start. I was curious about the mystery behind Kira’s sense of being stalked. It’s lust at first sight between Kira and Ky, but also hate. I felt the intensity of this attraction right away. Ky is still resentful about his dad abandoning their brotherhood to be with his new wife. He treats Kira with disdain even if the pull is so alluring between them. I felt sometimes his treatments and reactions were too over the top and unjustified though. But my biggest problem with the book was the fact their relationship changes drastically from enemies to lovers without any real events leading to this sudden closeness. I felt there was something missing in their dynamic to completely make it believable on the emotional side.
Overall the story was interesting and quite pleasant. It’s the progression of the romance that felt rushed to me and kept me from completely falling in love with this novel. M. Never is surely an author I want to read more in the future. This series sounds promising and I can't wait to know more about the other members of the Baum Squad!
