A deliciously steamy enemies with benefits romance. Declan McAvoy. Voted Biggest Flirt. Highest goal scorer in Kings of Rittenhouse Prep history. Everyone’s impressed, well except one person… After a blow out in high school, Makenna Halstead and I were happy to never have to cross paths again. Except life has a way of knocking you straight in the teeth with a puck when you least expect it. She hasn’t just returned to my life, she crashed into it like a wrecking ball...into my college kingdom, into my class, and smack dab into the seat next to mine. My new lab partner to be exact. For years we hated each other... I may be King on the ice, but she is the Ice Queen. She has no problem calling me out, doesn’t back down, and her piercing blue eyes have me picturing more than than just my arms wrapped around her. Now we’re stuck with each other and there’s no getting around that fact that we have to work together. My hockey career hangs in the balance. Problem? Oh, yeah. I can’t deny it. I want her. More than I ever thought I could want a woman. I’ve got one semester–only four months–to convince her everything she thought about me was wrong. Will my queen let me prove to her I’m the King she can’t live without? Only one way to find out...

Shameless King was my first Maya Hughes read and I was really impressed by this story. I love hockey romance, but add the enemies-to-lovers trope to the mix and I’m already sold! While I really enjoyed this story, I needed to put the book aside for a few days because I wasn’t connecting enough with the characters. When I took the book back, I was really in the mood and the story grabbed my attention totally.

The start of the book takes place in high school where we meet the star hockey players of Rittenhouse Prep. I enjoyed a lot discovering a little about those five guys that share the ice together. Declan is the cocky jock from a very modest household and Makenna is the brainy rich girl; their disagreements only create sparks. While they have a certain rivalry, it’s clear there’s something more under it all!

When they meet again in their senior year of college, they still make the same assumptions about each other. But when they’re paired together for a project, they can’t deny the attraction simmering between them anymore. Makenna and Declan slowly discover that there’s more than meet the eyes and the “perfect life” they thought the other have isn’t as glorious as was they thought.

This story brings a lot of emotions to the surface. The sweetness of certain interactions is simply so affecting and the steamy scenes are incredibly passionate. There’s also a good touch of humour, mostly brought by Heath that I found hilarious and intriguing.

Overall, I loved this story a lot and can’t wait for the next novel in the Kings of Rittenhouse Series. Maya Hughes deserves all the praise for a sexy, emotional new adult sport romance that was extremely diverting!
