Third Debt is another mesmerizing installment in the addictive Indebted Series. Pepper Winters brings everything to a beautifully excruciating peak of intensity with our beloved Nila and Jethro in this fourth novel.
The story starts where it ended, with Nila finally free of the Hawk family and Jethro waiting for his punishment for betrayal. It starts a little slower than the two previous books, both of our heroes trying to find something to live for. Back in her old life, Nila misses Jethro and the freedom she felt at Hawksridge Hall. Jethro sacrifices himself and his sanity to save Nila when Cut threatens is life.
“I missed Jethro with every fiber of my being. He was dazzling sunlight and now I lived in endless darkness.”
When she returns to Hawksridge, Nila finds a very changed Jethro, colder than ever. She’s beginning to lose faith. It’s tough to read it, knowing how strong she’s been since this series began. But with Jethro ignoring her and denying his humanity, she’s losing her hope and light. Kestrel is an ally for both of them in this story and I couldn’t have enjoyed him more. He’s really loyal to his brother and it shows tremendously during the Third Debt.
“Nothing is ever black and white, Nila. You should know that by now. It’s all about how you survive the grey.”
We get to see two very opposite edges of Jethro’s personality throughout the story. From a completely numb man just living through the motions and being a puppet to his father, to completely unravelled and stripped of all his icy exterior. OMG! It was the moment I was waiting for since the beginning of the series and I wasn’t disappointed in the least. My heart broke for him.
“I would live a thousand debts just for the gift of having you love me.”
As it was the case in the other books, the burning passion that ignites Nila and Jethro is still there. As much as Jethro tries to harden himself with Nila, the temptation is too high and they leave us with explosive intimate moments. Once again I was transported in a torrent of overwhelming emotions with these two.
“A kiss was a disaster. A kiss was power. A kiss was love and togetherness and faith. It was so many, many things. But this… this was something so much more.”
This cliffhanger is absolutely epic and I’m glad I already have the next installment and don’t need to wait to read Fourth Debt. Pepper Winters knows how to leave us on the most agonizing ending that’s for sure.
