Rough Around the Soul is an enjoyable read about Melanie, a senior in high school trying to make a future for herself in spite of her bad upbringing and Jake, a detective she has a taboo relationship with. While he’s supposed to be an authority figure and have a strictly platonic relationship with her, they have difficulty resisting temptation. Their attraction is intense from the start when they have a one-night stand, before she ends up in his drug education class.
I really liked Melanie and Jake together. Their interactions is based on a beautiful connection that even the age difference doesn't matter. Jake is really sweet, trying to make her realize she’s special and helping her in her difficult home life. Despite her young age, you can see that Melanie is mature and wants a better life than what she knows, but sometimes she can’t help but get into a little trouble when she’s surpassed by the events. But Jake is never too far and tries to send her in the right direction.
While I enjoyed the story, there was a little spark missing in the entire book for me to make it as grabbing as I would have liked. Some parts were very well written with the emotions behind Melanie’s struggles, but other parts felt too long for me to be immersed completely.
Overall, I had a good time reading my first Maria Monroe’s book. If you’re searching for a little taboo romance with appealing characters and a strong storyline, it’s the book for you.
